Glenn Compain – Policeman, Author, Mentor

Glenn Compain is an Auckland frontline policeman working largely with troubled youth, and he′s seen things that would haunt your nightmares. Violent gangs, rampant drug and alcohol abuse, soul-destroying promiscuity, parents unwilling or unable to tackle the mess their kids are making of their young lives. Glenn′s experience has taught him that every child is at risk at some stage during their formative years; that there are many influences in their lives that their parents can′t hope to control. His message is that it is the parents′ job to give their children the skills to make good decisions when the tough times come. By sharing his own story and experiences from the frontline Glenn gives concerned parents the tools they need to spot the danger signs for their children themselves. While he doesn′t claim to have all the answers, his commonsense approach and experience with troubled youth make his insight and ideas valuable tools to empower parents. A book for parents, teachers and social workers, this streetwise, straight talking look at today′s world will have everyone talking. Glenn Compain is of Maori, Samoan, African American and French ancestry. At 19 he led a team of voluntary aid workers to Uganda, where they worked with orphans and child soldiers during the civil war.
In 2004 he co-founded the Village Community Services Trust with ex All Black Michael Jones, which continues to deliver mentoring to over 500 young people at risk in schools across Auckland.
In 2005 he was approached to contribute to the Team Up campaign, a nationwide Ministry of Education campaign featuring Tana Umaga.
In 2006 he was commissioned by land Transport NZ to develop a resource to address the high level of road fatalities amongst Maori and PI youth. A compelling and charismatic speaker, Glenn Compain is a powerful new addition to the HarperCollins social and parenting list, and follows in the footsteps of Celia Lashlie and Nigel Latta.

Nigel Parker – Technologist

“I have always had an interest in technology. Since a very young age I have taken things apart to see how they work. I believe that technology should complement and not be a hindrance to human interaction. To that end I studied technology and psychology at university.
I took some risks and broke some new ground during the first “.com” bubble. I was one of the few that despite losing money didn’t lose heart for the unrealized potential of our industry. I set my sights on Microsoft as a place to work with a vision to make an impact on a larger scale.
During the five years that I have been at Microsoft I have been helping others realise their potential and adopt some of the most useful and exciting technology around. I'm motivated by big ideas and smart unconventional execution and I continue to challenge myself and others to fail fast and drive forward innovation.
I don’t see our future as a simple extension of our past I instead see it as a challenge that needs thoughtful intention.”
Ray Avery – Inventor, Scientist, Humanitarian

Founder and CEO Medicine Mondiale
Ray Avery is the Founder and Chief Executive of Medicine Mondiale, an independent development agency focused on creating sustainable solutions to reduce global poverty through the development of products and technologies that have applications in both the developing and developed world markets.
Ray is a successful Pharmaceutical Scientist, a founding member of the Auckland University Department of Clinical Pharmacology and former Technical Director of Douglas Pharmaceuticals. Over the past thirty years, Ray has made a major contribution in the development of New Zealand's Pharmaceutical Industry.

These laboratories supply 10 per cent of the global market for intraocular lenses and have contributed to decreasing the price of lenses from more than US$300 in 1992 to around US$6 today. Cataract surgery is now available to the worlds poorest and over 11 million patients worldwide have had an intraocular lens implanted which was manufactured using the technology Ray invented. Working throughout Africa and Asia and exposed to the raw and real shortcomings in Global healthcare, Ray was determined to use his knowledge of Pharmaceuticals, Science, Product Development and commercialization to tackle big health problems endemic in the developing world at a very practical sustainable level. Today, an International network of Medicine Mondiale scientists, technologists and business organizations are helping Ray to develop medical solutions to make quality healthcare accessible to the poorest of the poor and, somehow everyone finds themselves donating their time and knowledge for free and, they are rewarded by making a difference. Ray's work has been celebrated by his peers and he has won the KEA Biotechnology Award this year. The Bayer Innovators Award for Research and Development 2008 and was one of the ten finalists for the Saatchi & Saatchi world Changing Ideas Award last year. Billy Gammon – Adventurer

Most likely to…keep talking.
Born in Truro (Cornwall), England Chris 'Billy' Gammon grew up on the fairways of Trevose Golf & Country Club, the family business which his brother Nick runs today. Unfortunately for Chris he was a rather odd shape as a youngster and so it was he became known as 'Billy', named after that childhood hunk of a man Billy Bunter.
Like the rest of the crew sport played a key part in his school education but unlike Tom and Matt he managed to get through the book work and made his way up to Durham University to study Sociology & Anthropology - to this day we are all still a little mystified as to why, but he did at least get to spend a 2 month sabbatical staying with the Maasai tribe in the Maasai Mara...and if truth be known he's never been the same since.
Billy graduated from Durham and headed for London where he threw himself in to the dark world of advertising. This was to prove a particularly colourful part of his life and culminated in him joining forces with ex boss (and mentor) Peter Thompson as one of the founding members of M2M media agency.
